Wildlife Management Intern

WWF Zambia seeks to recruit a young Zambian with a interest and passion in wildlife management and willingness to work in Zambia’s national parks and game management areas to take up position of Wildlife Management intern for a period of 6 month from January to June 2019

The Role

The role requires providing support to field based wildlife program staff in data collection, arranging community meetings, compiling specific reports and carrying out wildlife management field operations.

Duties and Responsibilities

§  To collect thematic data on wildlife issues in key protected areas in Zambia. These may range from summarizing patrol information for specific protected areas, hunting monitoring data, compiling human wildlife conflict incidences wildlife snaring sightings and illegal activities.

§  To participate in specialized surveys such as wildlife monitoring, ranger surveys, ecological surveys and social economic surveys as assigned by the supervisor

§  To compile specific reports on thematic issues as assigned by the supervisor

§  To take part in various types of protected areas management activities such as fire management, snare removal, providing care for injured animals, species translocations, community outreach activities as well as meetings and workshops

§  Assist the filed based staff in organizing and delivering  workshops, training sessions and presentations  depending on need

§  To carry out other assignments as required as outlined by the supervisor

 

Required Qualifications, Skills and Competencies

§  At least a Bachelor’s-level degree in an appropriate conservation field (biology /natural resource management / forestry / wildlife management / terrestrial ecology).

§  Demonstrable attachment/ secondment experience  to a reputable conservation organisation during as part of the BSc programme

§  Knowledge of and experience with monitoring and evaluation of programmes / projects; and

§  Knowledge of the institutional and legal framework pertaining to wildlife and other natural resources management in Zambia

§  Good inter-personal skills, including the ability to develop and maintain strong relationships at all lev, including with local field project staff, local communities, government agencies, and the scientific community; and

§  Excellent oral and written communications skills in English.

§  Basic skills in working with GIS, Statistical and database applications

§  Willingness to live and work in rural remote areas and enjoy bush campin
